“Sculpting Cappadocia” in SSE | London.

 I recently happened to travel to Cappadocia in Turkey where I got introduced to its intriguing volcanic landscapes and sculptural formations. I believe that was a unique visual and cultural experience and so I would like to share it with you. I was thinking that this location is so intriguing that It can interest people who haven’t been there yet. I thought by showing it to you by introducing you to it in a creative and playful way you might start being inspired from it or even learn things from it’s unique character, it’s architecture, geology and culture.

Therefore I would like to invite you to participate in a two day workshop at the 26th and 27th of November.


26th November

Workshop.1. “The city, fairy chimneys and caves”. ex.1 & 2, ages 5-10 | two sets: 10:00 – 13:00 and 14:00 – 17:00

primarily collective participation in clay work and collage on paper

27th November

Workshop.2. “Exploring the underground city” and individual projects, ex 3 & 4, ages: 10-16 and 16 – adults |

two sets: First set: 10:00 – 13:00, “Exploring the underground city” with 10 -16 y.o and development of individual projects.

Second set: 14:00 – 17:00  – adults and development of individual projects

“Augustus ‘s Cappadocia”, A talk on an approach to sculptural practice

ex.1 ages: (5 – 7 /  8-10 y. o) Constructing clay miniatures of the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia.

We’ll be looking at the drawings and photographs of Cappadocia from the trip I completed last summer.

Enlarged drawings and photographs on cards will be given to children so they can construct their own fairy chimneys and caves.

Exploration: We will explore notions of the city, home and domesticity by working in the round by looking at the ways the troglodyte people of Cappadocia worked with tuff (the soft volcanic rock) by  removing, chiseling it off to form interior and exterior forms and spaces.

We’ll work in a similar manner by removing chunks of clay from an amorphous block whilst being inspired by the beautiful and intricate sculptural surfaces and landscapes of Cappadocia.

*  For younger age groups I’ll help children construct their own miniature clay dwellings, by looking at photographs and diagrammatic drawings of spaces and interiors of Cappadocia.

materials needed (air drying clay + wooden board tops to work on, wooden clay tools. buckets for water and tissue paper. First aid kit should be at hand.  All children should wear aprons or clothes that can be messy with.


ex.2.  Collage work will also commence, children will create their custom city maps through gluing cut outs. The intention is to derive in the construction of a new world by using Cappadocia’s and urban elements from London. The result will be a pastiche of ideas, buildings and situations and a new city will be constructed. Additionally children can also draw and connect these separate cut out elements. Teamwork will be reinforced


ex. 3.  Exploring the underground city. Aimed for a rather older group, individuals will look into the subterranean life of the troglodytes. The workshop will explore what an underground city consists of by looking into its composite parts such us it’s curved out stables, churches, ventilation systems and so on. Students will also explore how distinct spaces of the subterranean city interconnect by deriving to the fact that the city is a breathing and living entity formed by human needs.


ex.4 Advanced students can work in individual projects under guided supervision. We’ll explore the underground city, we’ll create specific poetically charged spaces
